Harry Potter
Well, I finished book 7 yesterday. I enjoyed reading the last book. I always hate it when a book series is over. Rose is reading it now and Curtis is trying to get me to tell him how it ends. He has to wait until she finishes it. Would hate to accidentally spoil the ending!

Dr. Pepper and Lianna
I just had a Proustian moment. You know how a taste or a smell can transport you back to an earlier memory!
It is warm today in the office. The air conditioner is not working properly. So I decided to splurge on a soda from the lunchroom machine. I got a Diet Dr. Pepper and took it back to the desk where I am working on someone corrupted computer. As soon as I took a tiny sip, the taste transported me back to the year 1977. That year my friend, Lianna Dillman and I would walk home from Schultz Middle School to her mother's office on West End Blvd. Her mother worked in the Girl Scout Council office and we would hang out in the kitchen and goof around until it was time to go home. Then Mrs Dillman would drive me home on her way.
Lianna and I got into the habit of stopping at a little donut shop conveniently located on our way from school to the office. I remember everyday that I bought a Dr Pepper or a TAB and a chocolate iced long john donut. It was such a happy time.
It never occurred to me why Mrs Dillman didn't mind my walking with Lianna and her having to drive me home. Now as the mother of a young daughter, I am only too aware of the dangers for girls walking alone. I realize that not only was she happy to have someone to keep Lianna company at the office, but that she was keeping both of us from going home to empty houses, and keeping Lianna from walking alone. Maybe the world hasn't changed so much. Maybe we are just more aware at a younger age.

Rose is home
Rose came home on Friday from camp and we have been busy ever since. Yesterday, we finally got to see the newest Harry Potter movie. It was fun. We splurged and went to see the 3D version. Kinda Cool! Of course, there is so much that has to be left out in the movies, since the books are sooo long. But it was still fun.

Hello Dolly
We had another perfect night in St Louis for the production of Hello Dolly at the Muny. We ate a picnic before in Forest Park. Emily and Jack fed an entire loaf of bread to the fish and ducks in the pond. Delana's food was a hit! Of course, who doesn't like Delana's food! A wonderful salad, chicken rice casserole, and BROWNIES.
A truly excellent production. I had forgotten just how funny Hello Dolly was. The rain held off until we were on the way home and the temperature as a result was perfect.

Inspiration for boldness
Yesterday, I while I was working out at the fitness club, I happened to stop on the C-Span Channel. There was a woman speaking to a group from the American Librarians Association about her book. I stopped because she caught my attention immediately as such a dynamic speaker. I started listening to her. Then I couldn't stop. I have never walked so long on the eliptical! Her name is Irshad Manji. She is a muslim woman from Toronto who has had the courage to research Islam religion for herself and has written a book called, "The Trouble with Islam Today, A Muslin's Call for Reform in Her Faith"
She was talking about her research, her struggle with her religion's dogma and her determination to reconcile with her faith. She spoke about women and how they are subjected to horrible crimes because of Dogma, not faith. She was fascinating. She talked about how she was able to stand up to her faith leaders because she felt it a matter of Conscience. She talked about how many hateful and threatening letters she had received, even her mother being ostracized in their home mosque by the faith leaders. (But members of the mosque also supported her mother).

Photo at VP Fair 1
Curt and I went to the VP Fair on Tuesday night. There was a huge crowd. We could see the Video screen of the band, Goo Goo Dolls, but we never even got close to the stage, which is at the bottom of the stairs next to the river. However, we were in a great place to see the fireworks and we good still hear the band just fine with all the additional speakers. The weather could not have been better, it was clear, and low 80's. People watching was fun too.Today for the 4th, we are going to have a nice little backyard grill and keep Tigger company when the neighborhood fireworks start. He really hates the booms!
