I have been watching this story for some time and it was the first time that I saw an opportunity for people to help with the project.
"One Laptop Per Child, an ambitious project to bring computing to the developing world’s children, has considerable momentum. Years of work by engineers and scientists have paid off in a pioneering low-cost machine that is light, rugged and surprisingly versatile. The early reviews have been glowing, and mass production is set to start next month" Read the whole article. Plus check out the companies website. http://laptop.org/en/index.shtml
My understanding is that these machines are very rugged, basic and energy effecient. What a great way to help kids be raised out of colloquialism and ignorance, by opening the way to more information!

There are lots of positive projects out there that sometimes get overshadowed with negative news.
I saw something on 60 minutes about the guy behind this effort. I think his efforts are truely for the people and not about profit $$$$$.
